Why Cold-Climate Air Source Heat Pumps (CCASHPs) Are a Smart Choice for Southern Ontario

Are you still questioning the value of Cold-Climate Air Source Heat Pumps (CCASHPs) in Southern Ontario?

According to a recent report from the Sustainable Technologies Evaluation Program (STEP) at the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), swapping out a central air conditioner for a CCASHP can lead to a 60-100% reduction in carbon emissions in just one day. This significant decarbonization comes with an incremental cost of around $2,000 compared to a new entry-level AC, but this cost is often offset by utility savings over the equipment’s lifetime. Homeowners also report improved comfort, making CCASHPs a clear choice.

Key Benefits Revealed by Recent Study

The study, conducted in Peel Region, Ontario, during Winter 2023/2024, revealed substantial benefits for homes using air-source heat pumps in conjunction with existing furnaces. Homeowners saw reductions in whole home gas consumption ranging from 62% to 91%, with furnace gas usage decreasing by approximately 80%. Most homes achieved near break-even utility bills compared to their previous consumption. The study also highlighted high satisfaction levels, with homeowners appreciating the comfortable indoor temperatures, quieter operation, and overall utility savings. Despite the phase-out of the HER+ Program, which helped reduce upfront costs, the financial case for CCASHPs remains compelling, especially with the recently announced HER Program and the Canada Greener Homes Loan. CCASHPs offer long-term savings and enhanced features compared to traditional AC units, making them a strong alternative for a more sustainable and comfortable home.
